I watched the movie Contraband last week, starring Mark Wahlberg. Now, TrippyBeth likes her some Marky Mark. I watched the entire movie waiting for him to remove his shirt, it never happened.
As disappointed as I was, Marky Mark made me start thinking about tattoo quotes, his quotes in particular.
“I just don’t want my kids to think that tattoos are cool.”
Hhhhhmmmmmm, not ALL tattoos are cool, I totally agree. But to make a blanket statement, is sort of douchey.
I think, that statistically, anyone with a large number of tattoos may have at least one tattoo that they regret, whether they’ve outgrown it, it was done poorly, they regret the placement, whatever the reason it’s a reality. That doesn’t mean that they dislike ALL tattoos.
Marky Mark got many of his tattoos when he was a different guy, pretty much a thug (he did some time for beating a Vietnamese refugee during a robbery). I get that he turned his life around, and wants to remove the reminders of who he used be.
Mr. Mark even took his kids along to have them watch the laser removal process.
For fuck’s sake, that’s just ridiculous. I can’t imagine making a child watch a laser cook the skin of a parent, that’s a little disturbing.
I’ve seen where former skin heads and gang bangers have reformed and need their tattoos of hate and allegiances removed, BRAVO to these folks. Any tattoos that are hate mongering are definitely NOT COOL.
Back to Mark, by his statement about tattoos not being cool, it says to me, that he got his tattoos in an attempt to be cool. Serious tattoo collectors don’t get their ink in a lame attempt to be cool; they get their tattoos strictly for themselves.
I now feel like he’s judging me, so I cock my eyebrow and say “Really, Marky Mark?” He is less hot to me now, even in his CK underpants.
There are other celebrities I admire, that embrace their ink, and are proud of it. One of my favorites is Johnny Depp “My body is my journal, and my tattoos are my story.”
I’m just going to say this “I love you Johnny Depp!”
From what I can cypher, Johnny has around 14 tattoos. They each seem to have some significant meaning to them, many for his family and significant moments in his life. He is not so different from most collectors.
The majority of actors avoid tattoos because they have to be covered with make-up for their various roles. But Johnny is at an advantage over most other actors, due to his talent and the demand for it. So he can say “fuck you” to anyone who doesn’t like them or who wants to judge him. He's not going to be collecting unemployment anytime soon.
"My body is a journal in a way. It's like what sailors used to do, where every tattoo meant something, a specific time in your life when you make a mark on yourself, whether you do it yourself with a knife or with a professional tattoo artist." - Johnny Depp
When thinking of tattoo quotes, I am particulary enamored with quotes made by tattoo artists themselves. Lyle Tuttle and Jack Rudy don’t pull any punches, nor is it a mystery how they feel.
"Tattoos aren't meant for everybody and they're too goddamn good for some people." - Lyle Tuttle, tattoo artist, author, and lecturer.
"It's a good thing they (tattoos) hurt; otherwise every pussy in the world would have one." - Jack Rudy
I could not have said it better myself!
Apparently they were too good for Marky Mark, and we all know Johnny is not a pussy.
There are other celebrity tattoo quotes that I like:
"For someone who likes tattoos, the most precious thing is bare skin." -
But, from what I’ve read, Cher is in the process of having some of her tattoos removed. I suppose she is desiring more bare skin, to bare for the masses.“Tattoos exude pain and pleasure all at the same time.”
I really like this. What is pleasure without pain? How could one differentiate if they hadn’t experienced both? There is a very fine line between the two…..
Mr. Bennington has a very nice collection of ink, and I’m a big
I'll close this morning's post with the following quote, and say that celebrities are just like anyone else, some are super cool (like yours truly) and some are total jackwads.....
"Tattooing is about personalizing the body, making it a true home and fit temple for the spirit that dwells inside it."
MICHELLE DELIO, Tattoo: The Exotic Art of Skin Decoration
